Situated in front of a volcanic mountain, Çandarlı Gulf consists of many small coves between Kanlıburun gulf and Arslanlı gulf. In sweltering summer heat, it is known for its refreshing winds. The coast is adorned with ancient ruins.

How to get to Çandarlı?

Çandarlı is 90 kilometers away from Izmir. Several travel companies buses to Dikili are also coming from Çandarlı and Aliağa. You can find permanent minibuses from these areas in Izmir.

From İzmir to Aliağa, IZBAN , the rail system , is available. Its possible to reach Aliağa with only one train from the airport.

Aliağa

Although Aliağa is a heavy industrial city, the cottage makes the air of the town like a summer village. You can eat fish at a small fisherman’s restaurant.

Sightseeing Route

The coastal part of the Aegean region where Aiollerin, a Helen village in ancient times, is known as Aiolis. Bakırçay from the north, Gediz in the south, and the entire Çandarlı Gulf region and the Foça coasts are the lines around Aliağa .

Numerous shores are listed and offer the most beautiful sea views and historical values of the Aegean. The ruins of the ancient cities of Aiol have been heavily abandoned and very few remain. However, these cities deserve a visit because of their impressive location.

Tourists visiting the Aiolis coasts can start the tour from Dikili to the coastal road or from Çanakkale Izmir road to Çandar road. If arriving from the coast, entrance to the bay is made from Denizköy. The next stop is the Çandarlı town, which was built in place of the ancient Pitane. It is noted for its Çandar, a well preserved Genoese castle on a peninsula that stretches like a horn to the sea. From here you will see the Bakruçay Delta, an important natural area. When returning to mainroad, the remains of the ancient harbor town of Elaia in very good condition can be seen from the village of Kazıkbağları to the shore. After that, leaving the shore, on the skirts of Mount Yunt, in the Köseler Village, unlike the coasts, the little Aigai, which was looted, can be seen. Upon turning to the shore, Gryneion in Yenişakran, then the remains of the cities of Myrina, or more precisely and wonderful places can be visited.

Despite being a heavy industrial area, Kyra is going from Aliağa in the coastal towns to the rich finds in Nemrut Bay. The next step is the mountain village Kozbeyli full of ancient Greek stone houses, then Yenifoca. The route between Yenifoça and Foça passes through wonderful coves. The tour ends in Foça.

Çandarlı

Pitane in antiquity is now known as Çandarlı. On one side of the bay lies the sea, surrounded by three sides. There is almost nothing left from the ancient settlement. The residence of the county from the Genoese was repaired during Çandar Halil Pasha.

Denizköy

A day trip to the north east of Çandarlı can be done. You can swim in the clear beach in this seaside village. There are islands opposite the village.

Elai

It is located in Kazakbağları Street of Zeytinbağ district of Bergama. You can see from the Kazıkbağları passing through a few kilometers of field roads, the most intact remains that the city has reached daily. However, there is no facility in this deserted place.

Gryneion

It lies on a small peninsula that extends like a dagger to the sea, about a kilometer away from the Yenisakran area of Aliağa. In the summer season of the oleander, you will find very impressive landscapes. You can go to the sea from the coast.

Aigai

Bound to Yenişakran Two kilometers from Köseler Village Then you arrive at the ancient city. Herodotus regards Aigai as one of 12 Aiolis cities. Since it is not influenced by the Persian occupation, unlike many simultaneous cities, it is rich in archaic period remains. In the Hellenistic period, the city of Pergamon in 218 BC, then the Roman city, was shaken by the earthquake in 17 BC as other settlements in the region. After this destruction, it was rebuilt with the help of the Emperor Tiberius. The settlement on Mount Gün was built on the terraces of the structure of the estate and was surrounded by city walls. In the city there can be seen three-storey agora, columned gallery, theater, gymnasion, the gate of the temple of Apollo Khesterios of Prokonsul Servilius Isauricus, who was commissioned to the Demeter of the 2nd century BC with the gate of the parliament.

Myrina

After the ancient city of Aliağa, two hills called “Öteki” and “Beriki” and the bay which settled in the pit of Güzelhisar river. However, only the remains of the harbors reached daytime.

Kyme

When you follow the yellow sign on the left about 4 kilometers to Aliağa, you will reach Kyme. The ancient city which is the biggest city of Aiolis region is stuck between the industrial facilities in the periphery. Many sculptures from the city are exhibited today at the İzmir Archeology Museum.
